About Us

Nangokudou, LLC was formed by Christopher Engle in 2015, and specializes in Asian art from the Neolithic through Modern periods, with a special focus on Japanese and Chinese art. Our inventory changes regularly, and features works in all media, including porcelain, bronze, jade, textiles, paintings, sculpture, and scholar’s objects.

Prior to founding Nangokudou, LLC, Christopher Engle was International Director of Chinese Art at Christie’s auction house, based in both Los Angeles and New York. Prior to that he served as a specialist and Co-Head of the New York Chinese Works of art department (2006-2015). During his tenure at Christie’s he worked on numerous important sales, including, but not limited to, the Collection of Robert Hatfield Ellsworth, The Xu Hanqing Collection, The Sze Yuan Tang Archaic Bronzes from the Anthony Hardy Collection, and
The Linda Wrigglesworth Collection of Chinese Textiles. Christopher had a special focus on Chinese furniture, though as Co-Head of Department was responsible for sourcing and cataloguing artworks in all media. He was responsible for numerous Chinese furniture sales, and for achieving what at the time was a world record for a piece of huanghuali furniture. He also organized the first dedicated Chinese furniture sale at Christie’s in several years – Fine Chinese Furniture from Private American Collections, held in Hong Kong in 2012.

Leading up to his career at Christie’s, he worked for many years in Southern California museums, including the Pacific Asia Museum, where he helped to digitize and catalogue the museum’s expansive holdings. In the process, he was responsible for identifying, translating, and recording various aspects of artworks from nearly every country in Asia.
